BOOKING PERKS

  • Is Madrid safe to visit?

Yes, Madrid is generally safe to visit.  Petty crimes, such as pickpocketing, can occur, especially in crowded areas like Puerta del Sol, Gran Vía, and public transport. Staying vigilant and keeping your belongings secure can help prevent these issues.

Public transport, including buses and the Metro, is safe and efficient. However, be cautious of your personal items, particularly during peak hours. Some neighborhoods may be less safe after dark, so it’s advisable to stay informed about the areas you plan to visit and follow advice from locals.

  • Is Madrid LGBTQ+ friendly?

Yes, Madrid is LGBTQ+ friendly. The city is known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community and welcoming atmosphere. Chueca is the central LGBTQ+ neighborhood, filled with bars, clubs, and shops catering to the community. It’s a lively area known for its inclusive vibe.

Madrid hosts Madrid Pride (Orgullo) in late June to early July, one of the largest Pride celebrations in Europe, featuring parades, parties, and cultural events that attract visitors worldwide. The city has strong legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, including anti-discrimination laws, contributing to a supportive and accepting environment.

  • When is the best time to visit Madrid?

Spring (March to May) offers mild temperatures and blooming parks, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The city hosts numerous events, and the tourist crowds are moderate.

Summer (June to August) brings hot weather, often exceeding 30°C (86°F). While it’s a lively period with many events, the heat can be intense, and many locals leave the city for vacation, resulting in some businesses closing.

Autumn (September to November) features pleasant weather with cooler temperatures and fewer tourists compared to summer. It's a great time to explore the city comfortably.

Winter (December to February) is the off-peak season with the fewest tourists. Temperatures are cooler but generally mild, making it a quieter and more affordable time to visit.

  • How can I be a good tourist in Madrid?

Be polite and respectful by using basic Spanish greetings like "Hola" and "Gracias." Madrileños appreciate courteous behavior and attempts to speak their language. Dress appropriately, especially when visiting religious sites. Modest clothing is required in churches, and beachwear should be reserved for the pool or beach. Respect local dining customs by eating at local meal times. Lunch is typically between 2 PM and 4 PM, and dinner starts around 9 PM. Enjoy the tapas culture by ordering small dishes to share.

Use public transport correctly by purchasing and validating tickets before boarding. Keep your belongings secure and offer your seat to elderly passengers if needed. Be mindful of noise levels in residential areas, especially late at night. Madrileños value their siesta and quiet during late-night hours. Avoid public intoxication as it is frowned upon. Enjoy Madrid’s nightlife responsibly and respect the local customs.

  • What public holidays/events in Madrid should I be aware of?

Fiestas de San Isidro (May) is Madrid's largest festival, honoring the city's patron saint with parades, concerts, bullfights, and traditional performances. It’s a lively time with many events and local celebrations. Madrid Pride (Orgullo) takes place in late June to early July, celebrating LGBTQ+ culture with one of Europe’s biggest Pride parades and numerous parties and events across the city.

Christmas and New Year (December) feature festive markets, lights, and celebrations. Key dates include Christmas Day (December 25th) and New Year's Eve (December 31st), culminating in a huge celebration at Puerta del Sol. Semana Santa (Holy Week, March or April) includes religious processions and events, particularly around Easter. It’s a significant cultural experience but can lead to crowded streets and altered schedules.

Día de la Hispanidad (October 12th) is Spain’s National Day, marked by military parades and public celebrations, particularly around Plaza de Colón.
