If you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen, there’s one place you shouldn’t miss, and that’s Freetown Christiania – total opposite from the rest of the conventional, ordered city just across the bridge! Founded in 1971 by a hippie couple who wanted to create their own way of life, free of societal rules, nowadays it’s known for its alternative vibe. Christiania Cykler

Christiania Cykler has been in business for over 30 years and is well-versed in providing visitors with affordable, sustainable transport. The rental fee is around DKK 100 per day, and it’s recommended that you reserve your bike in advance. Specialising in the Original Christiania Cargo Bike and the emblematic Pedersen Bicycle, you’re guaranteed to find something fun and different compared to other bike shops in Copenhagen. Plus, its unique location in the historical surroundings of the freetown makes it a delightfully interesting place to visit.
 

Morgenstedet

Existing for more than 20 years on a concept of collectivism and voluntary staff, this organic, vegetarian establishment offers an intriguing mix of cuisines; from Far Eastern to Mediterranean, it all depends on what chef is on shift. The ingredients are first-class, with a menu designed (largely) around what can be sourced in and around the local area. Both ecologically and economically sustainable, this approach corresponds not only to the eatery’s vegetarian tradition but also to a general consideration of resources. Also, remember that, though your food will be brought to your table, you are expected to pick up cutlery and water from a self-service counter and clear your own table when you’re done, which is all part of the philosophy that guests should contribute to maintaining the café and keeping prices low.
 

Kvindesmedien

The Kvindesmedien has been operating since 1997. Known for being an exciting and committed workshop, the three blacksmiths – Dorte Eilenberger, Charlotte Steen and Gitte Christensen – mainly work with steel, but they also know better than most how to carefully craft effects such as mirrors and glass. The result is a reputation for creating a dynamic aesthetic and bespoke models of furniture, including candle holders, jars, tables, chairs, decorations and sculptures. If you’re interested in home art and décor (or perhaps just want to find yourself a cool souvenir), the smithy has a lot to offer, so make sure to pay a visit the next time you happen to be staying with us in Copenhagen.
 

Science & Cocktails

Since it began back in 2010, Science & Cocktails has held a special place in the hearts of locals. Events are now taking place at Den Grå Hal or DR Koncerhuset. Each drink is carefully created by an experienced mixologist, with researchers and scientists taking turns on stage to cover intriguing topics. Held in English, they often evolve into conversations between the guest speakers and the audience. A non-profit organisation, everyone involved works on a voluntary basis, and the result is nothing short of spectacular. The Grey Hall (Den Grå Hal)

Originally built in 1891 as a riding venue in the army barracks, the Grey Hall is now the largest indoor concert space in Christiania. When the freetown was founded in the ‘70s, it didn’t take long for this impressive venue to become a focal point for everything artistic and musical. Big names that have performed here include Bob Dylan, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Manic Street Preachers and Faithless. It’s also in the Grey Hall that Christmas is celebrated in Christiania; first, a large market and bazaar is held in the leadup to the festivities, then you can join other people having a good time communally on Christmas Eve. ALIS Wonderland / Christiania Wonderland

One of the Danish capital’s most famous skateparks, ALIS Wonderland stands proudly individual among the numerous restaurants, cafés and music venues in Freetown Christiania. Constructed 20 years ago by two friends born and raised in the hippie district, Wonderland instantly became a popular meeting place for Copenhagen’s alternative community. Not only has it continued attracting the city’s underground crowd, but the park also now appeals to many prominent skaters, photographers and street artists, some of whom even travel from abroad to attend events and competitions that take place in the wooden skate bowl.
