Copenhagen Like a Local: An Insider’s Guide DISCOVER MORE: travel advice copenhagen There’s no better way to get to know a city than by asking the people who live it every day. From hidden gardens and swimming spots to where to find the best French bistro food, we sat down with our GM of Generator Copenhagen to talk about their favourite places, pastimes, and insider tips for making the most of Denmark’s capital. What’s the one thing every visitor must do in Copenhagen? Take a bike ride through the city like a true Copenhagener! Start in Nørrebro, swing by the Lakes, cruise through Nyhavn, and finish at Reffen for street food and harbour views. Where’s the best view of the city? Definitely CopenHill. It’s a power plant turned urban ski slope with panoramic views of the city and harbour. The best part is that you can walk (or run) to the top for free. What’s your favourite restaurant? Le Petit Rouge - incredible French bistro food at prices that make you want to go back again and again. And your go-to bar? Petanque & Shuffleboard bar. It’s basically an adult playground with great vibes and a fun, mixed crowd. Do you have a favourite hidden gem in Copenhagen? Bibliotekshaven, the Library Garden. It’s a peaceful little spot tucked behind Christiansborg, perfect for a quiet coffee break. What’s your favourite Copenhagen pastime? Canal dipping and people-watching at Islands Brygge, followed by an ice cream and a lazy bike ride home. That’s pure summer happiness here. Favourite park? Kongens Have (The King’s Garden). It’s central, beautiful, and always buzzing with life. But if I want something quieter, Søndermarken behind the zoo is just as lovely. Where’s the best spot for outdoor swimming? Kalvebod Bølge is a great choice - less crowded than Islands Brygge and perfect for a quick dip. Sluseholmen’s harbour bath is also amazing: modern, clean, and refreshing. What makes Copenhagen such a great place to live? The balance. It’s vibrant but calm, stylish yet laid-back, modern but steeped in history. You can bike everywhere, swim in the clean harbour, and enjoy world-class food - all in the same day. Any insider secrets you’d share with visitors? Free concerts at Tivoli on Fridays (especially if you’re with a local who has a season pass 😉). Cinemateket often has free screenings or cheap showings. Copenhell Warm-Up Days and Distortion’s street parties are free. Museums like Glyptoteket have free entry on certain days. Copenhagen has a reputation for being expensive. Any tips for saving money? Download the Too Good To Go app to snag super cheap meals from bakeries, cafés, and restaurants at the end of the day. GoBoat happy hours sometimes offer discounts if you book early or on weekdays. The Copenhagen Card is worth it if you’re planning to see several museums and attractions. And do it like the locals: bring your own drinks and hang out at Dronning Louises Bro or Ofelia Plads - it’s free and social. From harbour dips to hidden gardens, Copenhagen’s best spots are all just a bike ride away.
