History of Paramount Times Square - A Generator Hotel

The Paramount Times Square has been a staple in New York City’s iconic theater district for nearly a century. From its grand opening in 1928 to its current role as a stylish modern hotel, it has witnessed the changing face of Times Square while retaining its charm and history.

1928: A Grand Opening

The Paramount opened in 1928, designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb in Art Deco style. Opening with 700 rooms, an intimate dining room, large lobby with a mezzanine, and nine retail shops, Paramount quickly became a favorite among Broadway stars and high society, due to its offering of luxury and elegance.
 

1930s: A Golden Age of Entertainment and Glamour 

Charlie Barnet, American jazz saxophonist and composer, becomes leader of the Paramount’s band. Broadway lyricst and impresario Billy Rose opens the nightclub Billy Rose’s Diamond Horseshoe in the basement of Paramount. Chorus girls and well-known artists entertain tourists and New Yorkers alike.
 

1950s-1960s: A Shift in Times Square

By the 1950s, Times Square began to lose some of its glamour, and the Paramount wasn’t exempt from the changing times. The 1960s saw the neighborhood become known for adult theaters and a more gritty atmosphere, which affected the hotel’s previous elite status.

1986: A Bold Transformation for Paramount

Hotelier Ian Schrager and entrepreneur Steve Rubell purchase the Paramount and appoint Philippe Starck, French designer to do a dramatic redesign of the common areas. 

1990s: The Renaissance of Times Square

As the 1990s rolled in, Times Square began its transformation. With a major revitalization effort, crime decreased, and the area became more family-friendly. The Paramount reopens, with the renovation contributing to the renewal of the Times Square, experiencing a resurgence as tourists and theatergoers increased in the area.
 

2000s-Present: Renovations and Modernization

In the early 2000s, the Paramount Times Square underwent renovations to bring a modern feel while preserving its historic features. The hotel embraced its rich history and updated its interiors, blending classic charm with new amenities to cater to today’s travelers. The buliding earns designation as a New York City landmark and Real estate mogul and art collector Aby Rosen purchases the Paramount for $275 million. Now, the Paramount continues to thrive, offering a mix of elegance and contemporary comfort, making it a go-to destination in the heart of Times Square.
